Hi and welcome,

When starting off I would suggest you concentrate just on Ranger skills and have monk as a second solely for the hard rez, (monk resurrect skill over the resurrect signet so that you are able to use it multiple times on one outing).

I’ve found that the ranger is more than adequate to just rely on its primary skills.

Look at complementing the Ranger skills with other profession skills a bit later into the game. You can look at the Ranger sub-forum here to get ideas.

I would also look to join a friendly PVE orientated guild.

Good luck

Most pick monk. Self-heal is a big advantage for a new player.

I suggest, as a start you pick monk so you can heal yourself. Actually, I still play monk as my secondary except for when I'm capping skills for the title. I used healing breeze instead of troll unguent because breeze isn't as easy to interrupt as troll and I can heal my loyal pet Orson too. Because I have an aversion to getting to close the the bad guys, I use rebirth as well. You can stand on the very edge of a dead party member and the rez right next to you.

But it all comes down to what kind of build and such you want to run.

The rez sig can only be used once until you kill a boss. A monk rez can be used over and over and over.

Ressurection signet and sunspear signet (a mirror skill of ressuresction signet) can only be used once in the area you are in. However, the skill may be recharged if: 1. A boss is defeated 2. The party gains moral boost. There are other differences too. Ressurection signet takes only 3 seconds to cast. In higher levels of play, 3 second as opposed to the 6 second ressurection on most monk skills can often save teams for party wipes. It also decreases the chances of you getting interrupted. Ressurection signet also brings the target player back at 100% hp and 25% energy. Many monk ressurection spells fail to do so, and some even lacks energy return. Also, signets have no energy cost, while monk ressurection spells do.

Hope that helps you, enjoy the game! =D

I would also suggest, if you own Factions, assassin for a few of the shadow arts skills.

Mesmer can also be good for energy gain.

Mostly though, a ranger is one of those classes that can really stand alone without using a lot of skills from another class (the other two big examples are Warriors and Assassins). Monk is definately a solid choice for a beggener. Also, don't worry TOO much about your secondary. You can change it at will later on in the game so you can experiment with other things later.

Monk, as people stated, is a great choice for a secondary Ranger. The primary character I use is a Ranger and I rarely stray from Mo as a secondary mostly because rebirth is such a useful skill.
